A Few Types of Hamsters
Syrian Hamster
There are many different species of hamster, and only some of them are really well known. One of the most common “pet” hamster is the Syrian hamster (or golden hamster). They belong to the Cricetidae family and are one of the biggest hamsters, usually growing to about 6 or 7 inches long. Male Syrian hamsters have longer fur, which makes it easier to tell the difference between a male Syrian and female.
Winter White/ Dwarf
Another popular hamster is the winter white dwarf hamster. They are about 3-4 inches in length and have a long black stripe over their back, which makes them easier to spot. (You can think of their fur as a sunflower seed.) Winter white hamsters got their name because they turn white in the winter. Some winter whites’ fur in captivity doesn’t change color because it isn’t cold enough inside.
European Hamster
There are over 20 species of hamsters, and only 5 of them are in captivity. One of the hamsters still in the wild is the European hamster. They are the largest species of hamster, and can live to be around 8-14 inches long. European hamsters are critically endangered mainly due to habitat destruction.
