Hamster Nutrition
Here I’ll show you what elements are essential in a hamster diet, what to use in moderation, and I’ll give examples of some great sources! You should do more heavy research as well before creating your own hamster food mix. You can also watch our YouTube video below for another detailed rundown.
Protein
Protein is essential in a hamster’s diet. It should roughly make up 15%-20% of your pet’s diet. Protein is important because it repairs tissue and gives you energy. You can use these sources of protein below for your food mix.
-Mealworms
-Minnows
-Chicken
-Peanuts (unsalted)
-Flaxseed
-Hemp
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are important to include in your hamster’s diet as well. It should make up around 60%-70% of the diet. Here are some hamster-safe sources:
-Carrots
-Sunflower seeds
-Pumpkin seeds
-Flaxseed
Vitamins
Vitamins are extremely important in your hamster’s diet- each vitamin does something different. It’s great to include a wide variety of vitamins including the essential ones. Here are some sources!
-Broccoli
-Strawberries
-Flaxseed
-Pumpkin seeds
Fats
Fats are also very important to have in a diet, but of course in moderation. This should make up about 10%-15% of a diet. A source is listed here:

Make sure to feed all of these foods correctly and safely! For example, broccoli should not be fed with the stalks. Make sure your food mix is balanced. Do not feed anything to your hamster without observation on the hamster afterward and during. These foods may not apply to all hamsters.
